Overview
A new porcelain floor for the public lobby of North Miami City Hall, the room every resident walks through to pay a bill, pull a permit or reach the commission. The renovation carried through the corridors and service counters and out to the front doors.
The design
Large 24-by-24-inch honed porcelain tiles in three tones make up the floor. A light field keeps the lobby bright, and bands of the two darker tones run from the entrance toward the elevators and service areas, so visitors are guided through the room by the floor itself. A matching porcelain base finishes the walls.
The work
The lobby was renovated between December and January: the floor was prepared, then the tile was set and grouted with a tight, consistent joint. Aluminum reducers make smooth, accessible transitions at every doorway.
