Overview

A new floor for the entire second level of the Miccosukee Indian School on the Tamiami Trail, installed over the summer break so classrooms, corridors and the open atrium walkway were ready for the new school year.

The design

A light wood-look vinyl runs through every corridor and classroom, and color does the wayfinding. Bands of red, yellow, blue, green and black are inlaid into the floor at classroom doors, a bright yellow arc greets students at the elevator, and color stripes cross the atrium walkway alongside the school’s painted columns and wood railings.

The work

Every inlay was cut and fitted into the field so the colors sit flush, with no thresholds to trip on. The work was scheduled between May and July, while students were out for the summer.
