Overview

New flooring for the main auditorium and entrance areas of FIU’s Wertheim Performing Arts Center: the aisles, cross-aisles and stairs of the house, and the entries where audiences come in from campus.

The design

The house is finished in a red and navy damask-pattern flocked plank that matches the theater’s red seats and gives the room a classic performance-hall feel. Navy stair nosings, risers and base outline every step, so the aisles read clearly in low light, and brush-tile entrance flooring at the doors catches dirt and water before it reaches the auditorium.

The work

Stairs and stepped aisles were the detail work: every tread was wrapped in the patterned plank and finished with a matching navy nosing and riser, with the pattern kept aligned from row to row. The work ran from December into February.
