Miami-Dade County Commission Chambers

Two recesses, one chamber, no room to slip. We designed it with the County and delivered it between sessions.

01 — The brief

The Commission Chambers is where Miami-Dade County governs in public. The County wanted a room that honored the original dais while working like a modern chamber, with seating, power and data where commissioners and staff need them.

02 — The challenge

The chamber can only close while the Commission is out of session. That left two windows: one month in August and three and a half weeks over the holidays.

Design decisions

  1. APay homage to the dais. Keep its form and restain the existing wood slats instead of replacing them, so the room still reads as the County’s chamber.
  2. BBlue for the County. Chromatic Cadence in Kind Of Blue echoes Miami-Dade’s official color; its water-like shifts in tone keep a large floor from feeling flat.
  3. CTile, not broadloom. A 24" x 24" tile lets the County replace a damaged piece instead of a room.
  4. DCushion for comfort and sound. A cushioned backing softens long sessions on foot and quiets a room built around microphones.
  5. EFunction built into the stage. Custom cut-outs and concealed wire routing bring power and data to the dais without visible cable runs.

03 — How we solved it

We split the work by recess. In August 2024 we carpeted the chamber, including the floor under the new seating.

Over the 2024 holiday break we rebuilt the dais: granite countertops, wall finishes, paint, restained slats, custom cut-outs and wire routing. Design was settled with the County before each window, so every day on site went to installation.

04 — The result

The chamber reopened on schedule both times, and the Commission never lost a session.

The room keeps its history and now works the way a modern legislative chamber should.
